One low paver can catch a chair leg or hold water. A broad depression may direct runoff toward the house. Spreading edges can open joints across the patio. Although the surface units make the movement visible, the pavers themselves are not always defective.

A flexible paver system is designed from several layers: subgrade, compacted aggregate base, bedding layer, pavers, joints, and edge restraint. Drainage and surrounding grades protect those layers. Failure in any part can appear at the surface.

The short answer

Pavers sink or shift when the support system changes. Common causes include weak or disturbed subgrade, insufficient or poorly compacted base, washout, trapped water, failed edge restraint, eroded joints, roots, animals, freeze-thaw movement, or loads the patio was not built to carry. Lift-and-reset repairs should correct the cause before restoring the surface.

Weak or changing subgrade allows settlement

The subgrade is the native or prepared soil beneath the patio system. Fill that was not compacted in controlled lifts, buried organic material, construction debris, soft clay, saturated soil, or an old trench can settle differently from adjacent ground.

A small surface patch may return if the movement begins deeper than the bedding layer. Broad settlement, repeated depressions, or movement near recent utility work can point to a subgrade issue that needs more than resetting individual units.


The aggregate base is too thin, uneven, or poorly compacted

The base distributes loads and provides a stable, drainable platform. Required depth depends on soil, climate, intended load, material system, and site conditions. A base placed too wet, too dry, too thick at once, or without appropriate compaction can settle after use.

Uneven excavation can create variable base depth. Contamination with mud or soil can weaken aggregate. The base should extend beyond the paver field far enough to support edges, not stop directly beneath the visible units.


Water enters, washes, or softens the support layers

Runoff from roofs, slopes, walls, or adjacent beds can flow into the patio base. A low surface may hold water that works into open joints. At the downhill edge, uncontrolled discharge can erode support and cause the outer courses to drop.

The patio should have intentional surface pitch and stable edge grades. Uphill water may need interception before it reaches the base. Drains and outlets must remain clear. Repairing the pavers without correcting the water route often produces another low spot.

When settlement follows the route of water, rebuild the drainage path before rebuilding the pattern.

Failed edge restraint or joint material allows movement

Pavers transfer horizontal forces to their neighbors and the restrained perimeter. If the edge loosens, spreads, or loses support, joints can widen and units can rotate. This often appears near lawn edges, steps, curves, or places exposed to vehicle loads.

Joint material helps interlock the field and limit movement. Erosion, aggressive pressure washing, ants, weeds, or incorrect installation can empty joints. Replacing joint material will not correct a failed base or moving edge, but it is an important part of restoring a sound system.


Roots, freeze-thaw cycles, animals, and loads can disturb the surface

Roots may lift units or change soil moisture. Removing a tree can also leave decaying roots and voids that settle later. Excavating roots without understanding tree stability and health can harm a valuable tree, so the landscape and tree condition should be reviewed together.

Water held in vulnerable layers can move during freezing conditions. Burrowing animals or insects may remove material. Vehicles, heavy planters, outdoor kitchens, hot tubs, or walls can overload a patio designed only for foot traffic. The repair should address the specific force rather than only flattening the surface.


How can the movement pattern reveal the cause?

A narrow trench-like depression may follow a buried utility. Settlement along one edge may point to missing base extension or erosion. A hump near a tree may follow roots. Widespread waviness may reflect base or subgrade preparation. Water staining and sediment can show active drainage routes.

Mark the affected area and photograph it over time. Note rainfall, nearby irrigation, construction changes, tree work, and the original installation date. Confirm whether the problem is stable, seasonal, or continuing before selecting a repair scope.

How can a new patio reduce future settlement?

Design the patio elevation and drainage with the surrounding property. Remove unsuitable material, prepare stable subgrade, install the specified aggregate in controlled compacted lifts, use appropriate bedding, extend and restrain edges, fill joints, and protect the base from runoff.

Construction access and timing matter. Do not place a patio over newly disturbed areas without accounting for settlement, and do not direct wall or roof drainage into the base. Future heavy features should be located and supported during the original design.
